Daniels Park Road Closed through March 31, 2009

The Daniels Park Master Plan highlights phases of improvements to be made to Daniels Park throughout the next ten years. The first phase road improvements began on Dec. 8 and require closing Daniels Park Road through March 31, 2009.

During the first phase of improvements, the majority of work will be in the southeast corner of the City and County of Denver’s Mountain Park and will focus on: 1) improving the entrance into the park off of Castle Pines Parkway and from the south off of Daniels Park Road; and 2) modifying the existing intersection of Castle Pines Parkway and Daniels Park Road. This will require significant changes to the vertical and horizontal alignment of Castle Pines Parkway and Daniels Park Road and lowering the road by approximately 30 feet.

The project consists of paving approximately 1.2 miles of a rural collector road; installing 1.8 miles of curb and gutter; constructing a 12-foot wide by 13-foot high pedestrian/bicycle/equestrian underpass, a roundabout, concrete retaining walls and rock walls; installing a new storm sewer; and excavating 85,000 cubic yards of land (up to 35-feet deep into sandstone bedrock). A Plus Construction, Inc. has been awarded the project at a cost of $2.8 million.

Throughout the past three years, Douglas County Engineering worked closely with City and County of Denver Mountain Parks staff to finalize the park design elements and to develop a plan to minimize impacts for the much needed roadway improvements.

Daniels Park is 21 miles south of Denver in Douglas County and was donated to Denver Parks and Recreation by Florence Martin in two parcels. The first 40-acre area at the shelter house was given in 1920. The remainder of the 1000.65 acres was donated in 1937. Most of the park is a Bison preserve and natural area where visitors can view the animals in a high-plains habitat.
