County Art Program Announces Call for Entries

Sculpture artists are encouraged to submit to Douglas County’s Art Encounters™ public art program between Jan. 5 and Feb. 6 by visiting www.douglas.co.us/artencounters for detailed program information and an application.

Art Encounters is a year-long outdoor sculpture exhibit from June 2009 to June 2010 that showcases a number of sculptures, in various media and styles, displayed in highly visible areas in Castle Rock, Highlands Ranch, Lone Tree and Parker. The project is designed to promote public interest in art, develop community pride and draw visitors to the retail or civic areas where art is displayed.

This is an opportunity for artists to showcase their work that will be promoted throughout Douglas County and beyond. Chosen artists will receive a $500 stipend for each piece selected, payable after completion of installation. Artists will also have a chance for their work to be purchased either by one of the participating communities, an individual or a business.

All professional and amateur artists over the age of 18 are eligible and should submit existing, completed work. No entry fees apply. Sculptures can be any size as long as they can sustain all types of outdoor weather conditions and must remain a part of the exhibit throughout the year-long time frame. Each individual or group may submit up to three different entries and must include one set of two high-resolution digital jpeg images from different perspectives at 300 dpi or higher. An artist statement must also be submitted for each piece.

The Douglas County Public Art Advisory Committee, consisting of representatives from each of the participating communities, will review the applications and make selections at the end of February/early March. Artists will receive an acceptance or denial letter shortly thereafter. A total of 15 sculptures will be selected and may be installed in any of the participating communities – three in Castle Rock, four in Highlands Ranch, five in Lone Tree and three in Parker.

Please visit www.douglas.co.us/artencounters for the entire program information, rules for entering and entry form. For questions on the program or entry form, please contact Kim Smith, Douglas County Cultural Council staff, at 303.660.7347.
