East/West Regional Trail to Expand

Douglas County residents are one step closer to having an additional 12-mile extension to the East/West Regional Trail from Highway 85 to Bluffs Regional Park. Fence and trail construction will begin as soon as weather permits with an estimated opening of late Spring/early Summer 2009.

Douglas County Commissioners recently approved a contract between Douglas County and Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) that will reimburse Douglas County for the up to $1 million budgeted for the East/West Regional Trail expansion.

The East/West Regional Trail project connects the communities of Highlands Ranch, Castle Pines North and Lone Tree through a regional trail system.

The Douglas County Parks, Trails and Building Grounds Division applied for this grant in November 2007 and received word from the State Board of the Great Outdoors Colorado Trust Fund on March 28, 2008 that they were awarded the grant. On April 8, 2008, the Board of Douglas County Commissioners approved the acceptance of funding with the provision that the final contract would be presented to the Board for final approval.
