Building Code Adoption
Building code adoption increases efficiency, improves safety
The Douglas County Commissioners recently approved the adoption of new building codes that will result in an increase in efficiency, improve safety, and allow for the use of more innovative products and methods. The effective date for the new codes is April 1, 2009.
The majority of local jurisdictions, including the Town of Parker, Town of Castle Rock, Arapahoe County and Jefferson County are also enforcing these new codes.
“Code consistency among jurisdictions is appreciated by the professional design and building community as it saves in redesign costs when working in neighboring areas,” said Chief Building Official Bob Larscheidt.
Adoption of the new codes positively affects the insurance rates paid by all property owners because they can enhance the rating given by the Insurance Service Organization. Additionally, the Energy Conservation Code allows for a wider variety of methods and materials that can be used to save homeowners, businesses and builders money on utility costs throughout the life of the building. Application fees have not increased, and Douglas County’s plan review and inspection services are continually improving by adding new processes such as our over-the-counter tenant finish permits.
The new codes that were adopted include: the 2006 International Building Code, 2006 International Residential Code, 2006 International Plumbing Code, 2006 International Mechanical Code, 2006 Internal Fuel Gas Code, 2006 International Energy Conservation Code and the 2008 National Electrical Code. The County previously adopted the 2003 codes and 2005 electrical code, which, at the time, were the industry standard throughout Colorado and the U.S.
