Recognizing the value of their generation’s voice, Douglas County’s teens are speaking out about the County’s economic, environmental and community sustainability…..and asking their peers and others to join them in the discussion – online. 

It’s called the Douglas County Sustainability Youth Zone – a blog featuring video commentary from teens on topics such as:  the role of teens in creating a sustainable community; recycling; government leadership and sustainability; the cost and source of local water supply; and availability of transportation options. 

“We thank Douglas County for offering our youth leaders a voice in what is an important discussion for the entire community,” said Kristine Turner, Director, Youth Leadership Douglas County, a County-based, three-year program for aspiring leaders in County high schools. 

The Douglas County Sustainability Youth Zone is a project of the Douglas County Sustainability Initiative Advisory Committee (SIAC), a volunteer committee of residents, local leadership, business owners, and County staff. The SIAC invites discussion on components of economic, social, and environmental sustainability for households and the community at large, to support Board of County Commissioner policies and goals.  Public input gathered by the SIAC during its Listening and Recruiting Tour and through its online blog will be the basis for a vision statement and series of objectives about a sustainable Douglas County.
